Top Budget-Friendly Temporary Housing Options for Immigrants in the USA

Temporary housing for immigrants usually means an extended-stay hotel, a weekly motel or a rented room, held for a few weeks or months until you sign a lease. Hotels and motels can be booked before you fly. Rooms are often cheaper but take longer to arrange.

This guide takes you through the choice one stage at a time, from budget to documents to your first lease. Every price is dated, and where a rule changes from one hotel or state to the next, you are told to ask before you pay.

Last checked against official sources: October 2026.

1. Define What You Need From Temporary Housing for Immigrants

Start with three questions. How many weeks do you need a bed, do you have to book before you land, and can you pay by card in your own name? Your answers narrow the field fast.

The gap between arrival and a signed lease can be short or long. It depends on how fast you find a landlord who will take you without a US credit file. A room is usually priced at or below a month in an extended-stay hotel, and its rent includes bills. If you are moving on a work visa, our piece on H-1B sponsorship for international pharmacists shows one route.

2. Set a Budget Using Dated Figures

SpareRoom’s Q2 2026 US index covers 26 metros. It lists the average asking rent for a room with bills included, drawn from almost 65,000 room ads. The table samples the cheap and expensive ends.

MetroAverage room rent, Q2 2026Note
San Antonio$750Lowest in the index; up 0.9% on Q2 2025
Houston$835Second lowest
Dallas$870Down 5.5% on Q2 2025
Phoenix$903Down 3.1% on Q2 2025
Atlanta$948Used in the hotel comparison below
Los Angeles$1,338Among the six highest
New York (NY/NJ)$1,515Highest in the index

Use the table as a planning ceiling, not a promise.

Key Statistic: The average room in New York costs $1,515 a month and in San Antonio $750. That is a gap of $765 a month ($1,515 minus $750).

For hotels, InTown Suites listing pages in October 2026 showed roughly $220 to $370 a week and $820 to $1,380 a month at hotels in Houston, Atlanta and Phoenix. Prices change daily, so read this as a snapshot.

Here is a worked example with made-up inputs. Say a room costs $900 a month and the deposit is capped at one month. You pay $900 deposit plus $900 first month, which is $1,800. Add two weeks at a hotel at about $250 a week ($500) plus InTown’s $3 nightly technology fee over 14 nights ($42). The total is $2,342 before hotel tax, travel, food and transport.

3. Weekly Motels, Hotels and Rooms Compared

Each option solves a different problem, so match it to your answers from step one.

  • Extended-stay hotel: published weekly and monthly plans, bookable online before you land. WoodSpring states that weekly plans save on average 34% a night against the daily rate and monthly plans 44%.
  • Weekly motel: independent motels have no standard price list, so the real price is the one the front desk quotes you. Studio 6 states that weekly rates exist and that stay limits vary by location, typically 14 to 60 days.
  • Room in a shared home: rent includes bills, and the landlord decides on screening and deposit. You deal with the landlord directly.

Monthly is not always cheaper per night. At InTown hotels in Atlanta, the lowest weekly figure of $229 works out at $32.71 a night ($229 divided by 7). The lowest monthly figure of $888 works out at $31.71 a night ($888 divided by 28), so the ranges overlap.

Against a room, the picture is close. Atlanta rooms average $948 against InTown monthly listings of $888 to $1,378.

4. Cheap Extended Stay Hotels: Check the Rules Before You Book

Franchise front desks set their own practice, so a chain’s policy page may not match your hotel. The table shows what each brand states in October 2026.

BrandID and agePayment and deposit
WoodSpringRegistered guest, 18+, photo ID matching the reservationCard or cash deposit; first 7 nights due at check-in on weekly stays
InTown SuitesPrimary guest 21+ (18+ with military ID); physical government photo ID, no copiesCard required; $3 nightly technology fee; $50 refundable deposit on premium rooms
Extended Stay AmericaOne hotel’s FAQ lists driver’s licence, passport or state IDHold up to $250 for incidentals; cash rules differ by hotel
Studio 618+ (19 to 21 at some locations), photo IDDebit card holds can last up to 2 weeks
Sonesta ES SuitesGovernment photo ID; 21+ at several propertiesVaries by property

Important Note: Only the Extended Stay America property FAQ names a passport as accepted ID. The other brands say “government photo ID”. Call the hotel and ask whether it takes your passport before you pay.

Credit checks are a separate point. WoodSpring’s Phoenix property page states no lease and no credit check, but the other brands say nothing on the subject. All of them expect a card or a cash deposit.

Long stays can change the tax. Hotel tax exemption after a set number of days is decided by each state or city. In Texas, a guest who stays 30 consecutive days can be exempt, and Austin asks for written notice on arrival.

5. Look at Rooms for Rent

Furnished Finder lists furnished stays with a minimum of 30 days, and some landlords ask for 60 to 90. Rent, deposit and screening are the landlord’s choice.

The site’s built-in tenant screening needs a valid US SSN. For guests without one, its help centre suggests landlords ask for three to six months of bank statements, references from previous landlords or hosts, and proof of employment. Gather those before you write to anyone.

Pro Tip: Ask the landlord in your first message what they accept in place of a US credit report. If the answer is vague, move on before you pay a fee.

6. Screen the Listing for Scams

Scams are the biggest risk when you search from abroad. The FTC’s rental listing scams page, updated June 2026, lists the red flags to watch for.

  • Rent far below local averages
  • An owner who is out of the country or cannot show the property
  • Payment by wire, gift cards or crypto
  • Early requests for your SSN, a driver’s licence photo or paystubs

Search the address with the owner’s name, then the owner’s name with the word scam. Check county tax records for ownership. Do not send sensitive documents until you have seen the unit and agreed to rent.

Wired money, gift cards and crypto are usually unrecoverable. If you have been scammed, report it at ReportFraud.ftc.gov, to local police, to the website that hosted the ad and to your state attorney general. The FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center at ic3.gov takes internet-crime complaints.

7. Prepare Your Documents and Payment

Build one folder before you travel. Carry physical ID, because InTown wants the physical document at check-in, not a copy or a digital one.

ItemWhy you may need it
Passport and visa papersPhoto ID at check-in; confirm the hotel accepts it
Card in your nameMany hotels require it; the name must match the ID
Some US dollars in cashCash rules are set hotel by hotel
Three to six months of bank statementsA common substitute for a US credit report
Employer letter and prior landlord referenceShow income and a rental record from home

Check how your bank handles international transfers and card limits before you land. Our guide on opening a US bank account as a non-US resident covers one route. Whether you qualify depends on your own case, so ask the bank.

8. Apartments With No Credit Check: Plan the Move to a Lease

Having no US credit history is not a legal bar to renting, but automated screening often needs an SSN. Landlords then decide what to accept instead. Common choices are bank statements, an employer or prior landlord letter, a guarantor or a larger deposit, and some small private landlords simply decide by hand.

A bigger deposit has limits. Several states cap it, as the table shows, and these rules change, so confirm with your state’s official page before you sign.

StateSecurity deposit capNote
California1 month’s rentFrom 1 July 2024; up to 2 months for some small landlords
New York1 month’s rentResidential rentals
New Jersey1.5 months’ rentPrepaid rent held as security counts

Take rent of $1,400. In New Jersey the cap is $2,100 ($1,400 times 1.5). In California it is $1,400, or up to $2,800 for a qualifying small landlord.

If a landlord turns you down because of a screening report, the CFPB explains that you must be told and given the company’s name. You can dispute errors and ask for a free copy within 60 days. See the CFPB’s page on tenant screening reports.

An ITIN is not the fix many people hope for. The IRS says it is a tax number, gives no work authorisation and is not identification outside the tax system. You apply with Form W-7 and a federal tax return, so read the IRS page on how to apply for an ITIN, and see a tax professional about your case.

9. Know Your Rights and Where to Get Help

HUD’s fair-housing FAQ on immigration status, dated July 2012, says the Fair Housing Act covers every person in the US regardless of immigration status. Refusing you because of your national origin is covered. Immigration status itself is not one of the seven protected classes, and landlords may check ID and income if they treat all applicants alike.

You can complain to HUD on 1-800-669-9777, generally within one year of the last discriminatory act. State and local laws can be stricter.

Important Note: Federal refugee reception and placement help is for people admitted as refugees and some other statuses, not for general immigrants, students or workers on visas. Do not plan around it unless your status qualifies.

Dial 211 for local help (211.org). It is a free service run by more than 200 local organisations, calls are confidential, and most requests are about housing, food, transport and health. Availability and eligibility are local.

HUD-approved housing counsellors can be found on 1-800-569-4287, and services are generally free or low cost. Renter services vary by agency, so ask what they offer. Weighing the UK instead? See temporary housing for UK investor visa applicants.

11. Next Steps for Temporary Housing for Immigrants

Work through the list below in order.

  1. Write down your arrival date, your budget and how many weeks you need.
  2. Pick a metro and compare its room rent in the table with local hotel quotes.
  3. Call two or three hotels and ask about passport ID, deposit, card and cash rules.
  4. Check any room listing against the FTC red flags before sharing documents.
  5. Put your proof-of-funds and reference papers in one folder.
